Any year that I have watched the Super Bowl, it has been for every other reason except for football. I think last year I went to my neighbor’s house in the nick of time to catch the half-time show with Beyoncé, and then read the news stories about the black out. The year before it was all about the food, and the Giants. Oh yeah, the two times I did pay attention were when the Giants emerged victorious. Most memorable being when I was in high school and they beat the undefeated Patriots that season (poor Tom Brady!). I distinctly remember working on a poster for a social studies project as it had happened. Even when I went to the Rutgers football game, I watched the (drunk) people in the stands more being silly, and I re-learn the rules of football any time I watch. Ok, so that’s the extent and history of my football knowledge. But this year, there are a few legitimate reasons for me to watch (or so I think) to watch Super Bowl XLVIII and support the Broncos.
1) The Super Bowl is taking place in NJ!! Apparently Christie got booed on stage last night at Times Square at the opening ceremonies. Deserved? Maybe but not the right place. Not that I am a big fan of his recent scandals, but it’s NJ/NY and sometimes we just cannot keep calm. Or that’s how democracy speaks.
2) Peyton Manning. Not only is he Eli’s brother, but he is supposed to be legendary—especially after his incredible recovery from the neck injuries. To top it off, he gives his wife all the credit for his recovery and motivation. Now that’s what reeled me in. (Go #18!!)
3) Peyton moved from the Colts (another team with a horse name) to the Broncos (another horse name). And I think he has yet to win a title with the Broncos. Also, it just so coincidentally happens to be the year of the horse in the Chinese lunar calendar. (Happy Chinese New Year!)
4) To watch Sherman, the intelligent Stanford grad cornerback on the Seattle Sea Hawks, who was compared to a thug after his enthusiastic comments post-game. Especially in light of Bieber’s recent life fails, and how Bieber was called misguided kid, and not a thug. But really it’s Bieber who is being a thug.
5) That on Colbert Report’s “Superb Owl” this week the mayors of two cities betted salmon and steak for their team to win.
6) Also that the two cities that are playing represent the two states where marijuana is legalized, and they are competing in the Super “Bowl.” This meme had me cracking when I read on fb.
7) The gazillion dollar ads. Obviously. Plus more excuses to pig out on food too, not that stay in during this stark winter has been insufficient.
8) Bruno Mars & RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS at half time. I am SO excited for the Peppers. One of my recent nail posts had their name inspiration. They are one of my all time favorite bands!
9) And for the non-obvious reason: The Broncos have a prettier color combination of colors for a nail design. I free-handed the logo design, jersey numbers, and the small football on my pinky. All the colors were from Zoya (white: Purity, orange: Thandie, navy blue: , brown: ). My right hand just has an orange and navy blue swatches.
10) My final reason: because I was told to do so, and I will leave it at that 🙂
Happy Game day! Go Broncos!!
PS: did the groundhog see his shadow today??? It’s gonna be like 6 more months of winter in Chicago anyway.
